4 stars Beat is the next step for this lineup. This continues in the same vein as its predecessor with exploring polyrhythmic possibilities within a rock/new wave framework, shorter songs on average and all the more catchy without losing their intricacy. Songs like 'Neil, Jack & Me' and 'Waiting Man' are very good examples of this, while 'Neurotica' and 'Howler' stretch the madness to new levels and tease out a number of sonically exciting ideas without losing momentum. Much of the album was recorded live in the studio with very few overdubs and it is impressive how musically collaborative and creative this lineup really was, Fripp and Belew have mastered their complex interplay for a long time now and Bruford and Levin both possess excellent intuition and skill to back it up. Drums and percussion are especially exotic here, and Levin's dangerous dexterity on the Chapman stick really add special depth to the tunes. Although the quieter 'Heartbeat' (the single from the album) and 'Two Hands' may not be as popular with prog fans, I think they both fit the mood of the album and add further variety alongside the slightly odd instrumentals 'Sartori' and 'Requiem'. This album frequently seem to divide some opinions among fans, but if you liked 'Discipline' and are further curious on this rather unique KC 80s sound, it should be checked out. Or if you like a quirky prog/new wave combo, something along those lines.
