It is really, really hard to get noticed in the progressive metal market unless you bring along naked ladies with big clonkers on the front cover, some fantasy lyrics, trolls and/or sounds like a Dream Theater clone. It is even more difficult to get noticed if you go down the original sound route. Silent Lapse is up against it, in other words. But we like a bit of originality here, don't we ?

Silent Lapse's sound is somewhere between post rock and epic rock. Their music is not easy digestible either. It is pretty heavy, and not in the sense of their music being brutal and heavy. It is heavy because it is epic and a large meal to go digest. The vocal harmonies, which is excellent, also gives this album an epic feel. The guitar sound is also based on masses of guitars in harmony. The bass and drums rumbles on too and kicks ass in the speakers. Don't play this album if your bladder is full and there is no toilets around. Disaster is assured. I like the sound, I have to admit and I like their music. I also like their guts. In my dealings with them (see interview), they have come across as a sincere, professional band and a credit to this scene. My only gripe is the lack of some truly great songs here. The type of songs that would elevate this album from good to great and really break this band. They are close to be great, but there are still more work to be done. But for those of you who are looking beyond Dream Theater clones and want something closer to post rock than the prog metal scene can offer; this free download is for you. You will not regret it.
