Progressive Biography

"Victorious warriors win first and the go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win."
- Sun Tzu

I really can't explain my love for music. I raised under a household of classic rock from childhood, and I grew up loving bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Doors and many others. While I did go through a phase around 7th-8th grade where I fell into the sphere of popular music at the time (along with a few individual problems), I decided to follow my brother's taste and borrow his music. While I began to fall in love with jam bands at this point, I happened to come across a particular group called The Mars Volta. I had never heard anything like it, and I was enamoured by the complex mixture of styles involved, and while I was a fan of old prog like Yes, Genesis and King Crimson, now I had finally unlocked the secret world of prog.

And I never looked back.

Now my musical interests span from The Beatles to Ellie Goulding, Bach to Bassnectar, Miles Davis to The Devil Wears Prada, Dream Theater to Brad Paisley, Phish to Tiesto, Humble Pie to Mumford & Sons, Dragonforce to Isis, Between The Buried & Me to Wiz Khalifa. The only music I can't listen to would be opera, punk and most forms of pop music. Most, but not some. So really, I can relate to everything and everyone related int he world of music, which kinda echoes my life since childhood. While I started out as friends with the social outcasts, the kinds that always played video games and didn't know any girls, I schmoozed with all the different crowds, including the more infamous in the school. Some of my friends are jocks and football players, some are band members, some are social outcasts (not total druggies but they've been involved in that sort) and every stereotype in between.

So really, I have a multi-faceted personality. My perspective turns both ways. When one says "You don't understand", I respond "Yes I do, I've been there before". Of course, treading this gray line with both the light and dark sides surrounding me comes with plenty of risks, and I know this very well; I've stepped off it many times in the past. Yet I feel it's my obsession with music and my drumming that seems to be my haven from many of the realities, hardships, complexities and unknown surprises that come with life. There really is no other word for it. The public perception is that I'm a social outcast; I have plenty of friends and I can't stop talking. People notice that I'm a huge history buff and that I study wars a lot, so they assume I support warfare and that I want to be in the millitary; I'm too fat and out of shape to be in the military and I try to use diplomacy over physical action at all costs.

I'm basically a walking contradiction to, well, everything, including myself.

At the time of writing this, I'm currently battling the hardships that come with college applications and the mindfuck that comes with trying to deal with it all, especially for me as a musician that has to deal with auditions and lessons and theory. Oh my. Yet despite this hectisity in my life right now, I've always got the time for music and I've always got the time to talk as well. I'm always glad to engage in conversation with fellow music buffs, so long as it doesn't get too vague and personal. Yet there's never a bad time to wave the flag of prog, especially when many others don't.

So go ahead, shoot, because I have a riot shield.
