4 stars Perhaps this album is one-of-a-kind example of a style on the borderline with not so neighboring musical disciplines. Apart from progressive rock, we all can give a lot of examples of progressive jazz, progressive metal, progressive fusion... even progressive pop (sic!). But who can give an example of progressive disco? No phenomenon of such a sort may exist even in theory, right? Uh-uh, wrong, sorry. What is 1984 by Anthony Phillips if not '1970s disco meets 1970s prog'? Just see for yourself: the rhythms and melody making techniques are taken from disco, the structure of compositions is taken from prog, the arrangement and instrumentation principles can (partially, I admit...) satisfy as a prog fan so a disco fan. Some people say this album is 'dull'. I say it's a discovery.
