4 stars The best MkII LP after "Machine Head" and "In Rock", contains some excellent songs, even if the band sound comparatively disjointed in places after the slick AOR of "Slaves And Masters". Plenty of really good songs like the title track, "Anya", "Time To Kill", "Ramshackle Man", etc.

According to Joe Lynn Turner, though, the backing tracks for these songs had mostly been completed before Gillan was asked to return, so this could also have been a great MkV album. I do think that longterm damage was done by firing JLT, the band was sounding fresh and opening the set with "Burn" for the first time in many years.

With this album, all aspirations for commercial success were seemingly set aside (it peaked at just 192 on the Billboard chart) and it was the first DP album to sound like a previous one (it sounds quite like IR and MH). Very hard to dismiss though, in my opinion, it's a great listen.
