3 stars Corvus Stone (the band) has been around since 2012, and they haven't wasted much time: the Corvus Stone II is already their second album.

They are, however, still wasting an awful lot of sonic space. I wrote about their first album that it was like a collection of demos, recorded by the musicians to illustrate their ability to pull off riffs and keep the rhythm. This current album does project a somewhat higher level of sophistication comparing to the first one, so it would be appropriate to describe the songs as "Etudes" rather than just demos.

Poetically, I could say that Corvus Stone II has many facets, but it kind of lacks its own, unique face? Geez, that doesn't sound too poetical either :(

The only track that felt like a real song by a real songwriter was the #12, where the (presumably) Finnish lyrics overlay the dreary melody lines in a natural and synergistic way, which is great (authentic = double-plus good, no matter what) - even if the song turns out to be a little depressing and tedious to fully enjoy.

The rest of the album, well, it might have been written and played computers. I have now listened to the 80 minutes the "etudes" for at least 3 times and I couldn't make an emotional connection to any part of it (except the #12). I don't actively like or dislike the CS II, because I am somehow not finding on this album anything I could experience an emotional reaction to.

Let's wait for Corvus Stone III: something is telling me that this band, once they have made it past their demo/etude stage of development, can come up with a really great album. They do seem to be talented and motivated enough to do so. I'll be on lookout for their new album in 2015 or 2016.
