3 stars A bit of a fall off after the last three albums, Pepper's ghost never reaches the heights that they did. Although Bedlam fayre (similar to Chosen), The eyes of lara moon (fantastically varied for its length), and Tantalus (a bit like the Butterfly man) are all praiseworthy, the real bulk here is the climactic mini-epic, Opera fanatica. This track is not for those with no sense of musical humour, however, as Arena push their dramatic style right to the edge here. 'The king is dead, so worship me!' Ludicrous lyrics, I hope you'll agree. But fun. The rest of the songs are not as well developed, Smoke and mirrors not having enough bulk, the Shattered room being overlong, and Purgatory road just sounding a bit rubbish to me... Oh well. The next album, a concept, should be better.
