3 stars Gilmour's Best Solo Album.

Totally underappreciated. Although highly produced with a clear target on some commercial success, this is still Gilmour's best solo album. The strength is in the song-writing. "Near the End" and "Murder" are Gilmour's two very best solo-album songs, and better than virtually any of the post-Waters Floyd songs. Meanwhile "Until We Sleep", "Love on the Air", and "All Lovers are Deranged" are all great tunes, definitely on par with the best of the post-Waters Floyd. "Cruise" is an excellent anti-war (anti-cruise-missile, to be precise) piece in a reggae-like beat, and works very well. "Out of the Blue" and "Let's Get Metaphysical" show off Gilmour's excellent guitar playing. The two more sour pieces are "You Know I'm Right", which appears to be a jab at Waters, and the song they released as a single, "Blue Light", which although it has a great echo-based guitar pattern, falls flat as a song. But on the whole, this is quite a worthy album, and does not deserve the low grades it has got here on PA. I give this album 7.6 out of 10 on my 10-point scale, which translates to high 3 PA stars (so, almost 4 stars). If you were to start with any Gilmour album, I would start with this one, particularly on the strength of "Murder" and "In the End" - two wonderful tunes that belong among the best of the extended Floyd collection.
