4 stars Oh, what DEEP PURPLE could have gone on to become had Richie stayed with the band and they had continued on this path but alas, they are forever to be known for the easiest guitar riff played at least 12 times a day on any local classic rock station. Don't get me wrong, I like Smoke On The Water but we are just friends. It took me years do discover Purple had a prog side. When I first heard this album it was like a blessed angel had delivered it to me, telling me to go forth, let the people know that there is DEEP PURPLE outside of Machine Head!. I listened over and over again to this album till alas, I buried my car with this CD forever stuck in its mangled body, good friends gone, DAMNed be the snow! Despite horrible, disorienting memories flying back to me everytime I hear the build for April I can push past it and still listen fondly, in the comfort of my own home. Anyway, if you are prog inclined than this album should easily represent to you DEEP PURPLE's musical peek. And spread to good word if you will, let the people know there was a self titled! LET THEM KNOWWWW! I am torn by rating definitions because while I believe this album to be essential listening for all rock fans, prog or otherwise, I wouldn't call it a complete masterpiece. 4.4444444444444444444 turnpike spins ending in the guardrail, only to be hit by a truck and end up in the median out of 5.
