STEVEN WILSON needs no introduction to PORCUPINE TREE fans who know him as the front man and driving force behind this popular band. STEVEN WILSON has several side-projects going, along with PORCUPINE TREE - and now he has produced his first official solo effort INSURGENTES.

Well first I have to say the album has a familiar feel to its themes from the dark and moody Salvage and No Twighlight Within The Courts of The Sun to psychedelia and balladry of Significant Other, Venemo Par Las Hadas, and the stunningly beautiful Harmony Korine, the introductory track of the album. There is a short instrumental Twighlight Coda, which features guest musician JORDAN RUDESS on Piano and is one of the lighter moments of an album which juxtaposes between Heavy Metal and psychedelic rock that STEVEN WILSON has not (thank-goodness! for this reviewer) completely abandoned.

The final track on the core album is the title track Insurgentes which revisits Hamony Korine, and gently concludes and exciting piece of work, by a very talented musician. STEVEN plays most instruments and is lead vocalist. Guests include aforementioned JORDAN RUDESS, TONY LEVIN and GAVIN HARRISON.

The bonus disk contains five tracks. Track one is the metal inspired Port Rubicon. Track two, Puncture Wound had me humming along and then I realised I was trying to hum A Forest by THE CURE. I could not help but notice some similarities in the music. A great track never-the-less. The third track is another instrumental Collecting Space which features MICHIYO YAGI playing the 21 string koto adding a touch of Asia to the track. Track four, revisits the title track Insurgentes while the final track five, Untitled, is electronically inspired metal complimented with introspective lyrics. The bonus disk, which is only available as part of the Special Edition, is not essential to the album per se. However, it is interesting enough to make picking up the Special Edition a must, if possible

Overall an enjoyable, solid effort from STEVEN WILSON, which will keep legions of fans happy until the release of the next PORCUPINE TREE/STEVEN WILSON album. I give it a 5 star rating without hesitation.
