3 stars "Rock Action" is the third full-length studio album by by Scottish post-rock act Mogwai. The album was released through Matador Records in April 2001. Itīs the successor to "Come On Die Young" from 1999, although the two full-length albums are bridged by a couple of EPs.

Stylistically Mogwai have developed their sound now utilizing synths and more vocals than on the previous releases. Itīs slow building atmospheric rock featuring a predominantly melancholic mood. The vocals are subdued and almost sedated in nature, suiting the coolness and organic warmth of the instrumental tracks well. Welch singer Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) guests, performing lead vocals on "Dial: Revenge". His vocal style however doesnīt differ much from other vocal moments on the album. Itīs laid back, melancholic, and subdued, just like most other parts of the album.

"Rock Action" is overall accessible for a post-rock release, and itīs not the worst place to start a post-rock journey, before entering more experimental territories. This may be both repetitive and slow building (purposedly), but there are strong melodies here, and an emphasis on beautiful climaxes, which should appeal to a post-rock novice. Mogwai are a very well playing band too, and if you add the well sounding organic production job to the equation, "Rock Action" is a strong album release by Mogwai. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
