2 stars The opening minutes of this album reminds me alot about RENAISSANCE. Then the album takes off in a slightly different direction, but still within the same area as the above mentioned band.

RENAISSANCE has obviously inspired a lot of bands, indirectly or directly. SOLSTICE is no difference. But where the vocals are female, the music is a blend of contemporary rock/pop, neo-prog and some latter days RENAISSANCE. The lush piano and keyboards which made RENAISSANCE such a great band is absent from this album. Instead, we get some violins and guitars + keyboards, drums and bass. The vocals is nowhere as dominating as Annie Haslam's vocals. They are also slightly more meditative. I do not think they vocals here are particular good. Neither is the music.

The problem with this album is the lack of good melodies or even themes. It becomes wishy washy and nothing really draws me in. Nice instruments, but no substance. There are some fierce violins which is pretty good. But the rest is pretty dull. The lack of a memorable tune or two is killing this album in my view. And that's why I am not recommending it.

2 stars.
