5 stars A folk treat for rainy evenings.

By now,Jethro Tull had developed their sound into a subtle and melodic folk workout. The band would move on and incorporate a wider range of influences in the following album as we all know it(and therefore evolve into a proper progressive rock band),but in Benefit their earliest sounding reached a remarkable peak, closer to perfection than ever before. It's interesting to notice that this one keeps the spontaniety found in This Was and Stand Up,and still manages to capture the listener's attention in the same way Aqualung would do.It's an extremely pleasant album with wonderfull tunes, although it's progressive relevance is questionable.

The band simply cannot be given enough credit for creating what is,alongside Thick As a Brick, the most consistent album of their career in what is all in all a predominatly acoustic recording. The strenght of each song and how well balanced they are, make a huge contribution to the album's joyfull, pastoral sound.Highlights include the wonderfull with You There To Help Me,one of the finest songs in the band's career,Sossity; You're a Woman and To Cry You a Song, but every piece(with the possible exception of Son)is a gem.A beloved moment of mine is the nostalgic melody of For Michael Collins,Jeffrey and Me,an acoustic ballad that grows in it's powerfull chorus.I've also heard throughout the years people mentioning Nothing To Say as there all-time favourite Jethro Tull song.

It's a shame that Benefit never received the attention it deserves, seeing as it doesn't contain any of the band's classics. So being,it's sophisticated folk approach, priceless spontaniety, and ultimately it's magical songs remain a well kept secret in Jethro Tull's rich discography.
