2 stars Ulver never fails to surprise. After that accoustic folk-rock album Kveldssanger, they return with a primitive black metal album. The sound is down the Darkthrone alley. What a contrast to Kveldssanger !

The music is pretty OK. I have to admit that I prefer Darkthrone or even Emperor to this. But this is pretty decent black metal. Although with rasping voice and very bad sound. But it fulfills it's purpose. The songs has a melodic edge, although not as melodic as Enslaved or even Windir. The guitars are doing the business. The music is typical for the nordic black metal scene, mark II. This being a prog rock website, I cannot recommend it to anyone here. I would not even recommend it on a black metal forum. The music here is too generic and back to basic black metal. Maybe that was the purpose of this album. Enslaved took one step back on Frost and Ulver has taken one step back on this album. Back to basic, as we call it. Sorry, but this is too basic black metal for me and not worthy many stars.
