4 stars Allan was so exited in the mid 80's to finally get a synth controller which could keep up with his extremely fast lines. Perhaps, the GR-1 from Roland wasn't to his liking as it had multiple glitch problems, especially in a live music environment. Innovation was in the air, however, the Synthaxe is a very expensive instrument and didn't catch on with the public. It looks like an outer space "Spock" futuristic controller and the cover of the album conveys this idea quite nicely. Many people couldn't understand the direction Allan was going as he wanted to explore new sounds and colors with guitar synthesis. This was his first real album of that nature and his exploration earned him a hall of fame award as the best guitar synthesizer player 5 years in a row in Guitar Player magazine. In all, the album was a distinct progression from his previous solo projects and should be considered a great progressive jazz/rock album. The opening track is beyond comprehension, Non Brewed Condiment, where he actually doubles the melody with guitar and synthaxe. It actually is very tasteful in the combination of the two instruments and the drumming is top shelf with Tony Williams, Chad Wakeman and the multi instrumentalist Gary Husband. With this record Allan made a unique statement in modern music which has never be matched and most likely never will be.
