4 stars What a brilliant work this is ? Following up their previous fine album, "The Crane Wife", could not have been an easy task. However, these guys and gals just keep coming up with new and interesting material. The Decemberists expand their palette considerably on this new offering. Opening slowly , the piece builds from a low Hammond hum. It's fully three minutes before an acoustic guitar chimes in.... and the tale commences. Love, lust, loss of innocence, filicide, and ultimately a freedom in death. Not light fare by any means, but the weight of the story is nicely balanced by some quite incredible music. Gravelly electric guitar, crying pedal steel, plinking harpsichord, wheezing accordion, and stunningly beautiful acoustic guitar work. The music goes from roar to rapture and back again, echoes of Pink Floyd and The Beatles here and there. Ultimately though, the sound is unique to the Decemberists. This unassuming band of misfits from Oregon have done it again. The Hazards Of Love get's better with each play. I look forward to the next adventure !
