4 stars Let me begin by commending the artistry and creativity that was put into Gryphon's 1974 album "Midnight Mushrumps". This album is not only a cult classic but also a reflection of the exceptional talent and unique musical arrangements of the band. I really would like to compare them to Harmonium, but I will be straightforward in my review.

Firstly, the album comprises seven tracks that blend traditional folk music with prog-rock and medieval instrumentation, creating a unique and mesmerizing sound that is distinctively Gryphon. The opening track "Midnight Mushrumps" immediately captivates the listener with its haunting mellotron and the gripping use of flutes and electric guitar. The track "The Ploughboy's Dream" follows suit, delivering a charming and intricate sound that the listener will find hard to resist.

A standout track in the album is "Mother Nature's Son", which takes a somber turn with its melancholic and enchanting acoustic guitar arrangement. It is intimate and delicate, with a sense of longing and yearning that resonates with the listener. The track "Gulland Rock" delivers a perfect blend of musical styles with a driving force of drums and bass and the soaring melodies of saxophone and violin.

However, the album does have its downsides. The track "Ethelion" feels a bit too jumbled and overwhelming, making it hard for the listener to keep track of the different musical instruments and melodies that are brought together in an almost chaotic manner. Moreover, the album's closing track "Dubbel Dutch" seems to be lacking in comparison to the preceding tracks, failing to reach an expected climax.

Overall, Gryphon's "Midnight Mushrumps" remains a hallmark of the 1970s prog-folk rock musical style, showcasing an impressive array of musical talents and extraordinary innovation. Fans of these musical genres will find themselves drawn to this album, and fans of Gryphon's work will be beyond thrilled to add this to their collection.
