5 stars Review #127!

Tangerine Dream's second album, 'Alpha Centauri', was probably the most organic they ever sounded. The synths are only background effects and flute, organs, and occasional percussion are in the forefront. Like many of their other albums, 'Alpha Centauri' is prone to long, droning song structures. All three but the first, 'Sunrise in the Third System', are long and slow pieces. "Sunrise" is a wonderful little bite-sized portion of ambience. Surprisingly intense. 'Fly and Collision of Comas Sola' is a beautiful ambient piece. The synths make a simple hum and other elements zoom in and out, painting an interesting picture (one that changes every listen). The flute here is mesmerizing, and the drums are superb. This would fit well on 'Zeit'. The sidelong title track is just a collage of droning sounds that ring beautifully, creating a sea of noise. There are many interesting sounds here, from what sounds like whale calls to the hum of a refrigerator. Very eclectic, and in the best way. This early Tangerine Dream album is an amazing one that everyone should own and/or listen to. 'Alpha Centauri', for your consideration. Prog on.
