4 stars 'Market Square Heroes' is the debut Marillion EP/single, released in 1982, and featuring the original classic line-up with Fish and Mick Pointer. It is a very fine introduction for a band that was trying to introduce itself amidst a difficult and ever-changing musical scene. The three songs on the EP are obviously influenced by the classic-era Genesis, yet work quite well as a flamboyant homage to the prog rock titans' music. The two shorter songs and the 17-minute epic 'Grendel' work more as a taster for what was about to come in the next few years (with 'Script' and 'Fugazi' in particular), [even if Marillion directly stole the 'Apocalypse in 9/8' part from 'Supper's Ready']. It is nevertheless a great introduction to Marillion, a brief forecast, and an initial exercise in prog rock pastiche.
