3 stars MOGWAI's first full-length album. There are several stellar tracks on this disc, starting with the opener, "Yes! I am a Long Way from Home." "Katrien" and the short "A Cheery Wave From Stranded Youngsters" are also great tracks. Nothing, however, prepares you for the gradeur of the 16+ "Mogwai Fear Satan." There are a few weak spots, notably the stereo- experiment "With Portfolio." It's very interesting the first few listens, but on repeated listens is sticks out on the album like a bad zit. "Like Herod" is a good song, but a tad too long simply due to repetitiveness. I'd recommend the album to fans of the prog side of post-rock, and people who appreciate emotionally charged instrumental rock with lots of dynamics. If you're completely ignorant of MOGWAI, start with "Rock Action."
