3 stars First of all i should say i was expecting more from this great band and this album is not good enough!

The King Is Dead is an average modern folk(country) rock album with american pop music influences and i can assure you it doesn`t meant to be a progressive album at all (despite the two previous albums 'Crane Wife' & 'Hazards of Love' that they are masterpieces in new prog folk movement).

Six out of ten tracks are under 4 minutes and the longest track is 5:30 seconds.

But let`s look at the bright side of this album, Colin Meloy`s vocal is like always, unique and beautiful, i like his voice and its just wonderful and seductive.

Instruments in this album are mostly acoustic and you can hear guitars and mouth organ all over the album.

'June Hymn' , 'This Is Why We Fight' & 'Rise To Me' are the best moments of the album. Conclusion: i think Th King Is Dead is a good country album with joyful moments in it but not an essential progressive album, the previous works of this band made expectations from prog fans but this album cannot answer this expectations. 3 stars
