3 stars Eno's 2010 effort "Small Craft on A Milk Sea" is a collection of instrumental works with a definite 21st century feel. The album consists a combination of "vertical" sound-scapes, the attraction of which lies in timbrel qualities rather than melodic or rhythmic interest, interspersed with driving beat-based pieces reminiscent of "My Life...", albeit without the extensive use of sampling in the Eno/Byrne collaboration. Gone are the African and Middle Eastern beats of Eno's past, and in their place lie a collection of techno, and even a return to straight(ish) rock beats. The rhythmic backgrounds are supported largely by pulsating bass and electronic lines, in addition to a sprinkling of electric guitar.

As usual, Eno's ambient work shines with atmospheric beauty, but his more rhythmic passages, despite being enjoyable enough, lack the interest and excitement of those on other albums such as "Another day on Earth" and "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts". The only blatantly cringe- worthy moment of the album comes in the second half of 2 Forms of Anger, when grungy guitar overpowers the build-up of aggression so carefully crafted in the former part of the track.

Overall, Small Craft on a Milk Sea is an album worth listening to for those with some interest in ambient music, but lacks the freshness and flow that made Eno's former works so captivating.
