5 stars This IS a masperpiece. Period. Arguably the most 'heavy' album of Opeth - arguably the most progressive as well. Listen to the title track for example... as always the standards of Opeth are beoynd traditional metal. This is experimental perfection within a quite classic framework (if the pairing of death and prog metal can be considered 'classic').

Everything in Opeth's history of epic and classic albums must be considered not only recommendable, but rather 'essential' to anybody who appreciates originality in arts and

This album is a stunning effort and a testament to the fact that Opeth remains a highly unique metal band due to their amazing and innovative blend of genres and STUNNING musicianship. It also puts unto perspective the fact that about 97% of traditional prog metal acts lacks spiritual effort and a pervasive sense of soul...thus their existance are usually justified by their craftmanship... but why the fuck ARE they and WHY the fuck are they DOING what they do? There is little or no sense of purpose and when present it is usually overacted to the point of embarresment, making the experience either/both a narsissistic show off and/or a poor theatrical act. This may seem a provacative statement... it's nevertheless simply the barenaked truth!

In the case of Opeth the purpose always seems real, the music is both daunting as well as haunting and the spirits of torn lost souls seems to be luring somewhere in the shadows.
