4 stars Sadly, I have never purchased any of the early Peter Hammill albums that this, his first collection, was derived from. It wasn't for lack of trying. His albums, back in the late seventies and early eighties were rarely found in the used record stores in Boston and Cambridge. New copies of his albums were rarely stocked, even in good record stores, like The Harvard Coop.

This album indicates that on Hammill's early albums, he retained much of the style of Van Der Graaf Generator (as well as the musicians). His songwirting was just beginning to have that personal edge that made his singing so heartfelt. Being a compilation, the themes jump around quite a bit, and you can't get a handle of what each album was about, but you do get the idea that these are some of his best works.
