4 stars A great album! Tommy Bolin is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock in my opinion. He proved to be a talented songwriter, an inventive rhythm, and outstanding lead guitarist. It's a bold statement but I think Bolin is a better guitarist than Blackmore. Tommy's songwriting and playing chops really show on his solo work Teaser and Private Eyes, and albums like Billy Cobham's Spectrum. Come Taste The Band is a solid album despite the fact that it has been much maligned over the years. The album is much stronger than Purple's last album Stormbringer, and one shouldn't let the fact that Blackmore isn't on this album turn one off from picking this album up. This is FAR from prog in any form however. A solid funky hard rock record with some jazz influences.
