Riverside have now established themselves as one of the most respected bands in the progressive metal community, and their rise in popularity can be partially attributed to the strength of this debut album. Released in 2003 it was the first in the Reality Dream trilogy which continued in 2005 with 'Second Life Syndrome', and concluded in 2007 with 'Rapid Eye Movement'.

As well as forging their signature metal style on 'Out of Myself', Riverside also hint at more unusual soundscapes, which would later become associated with Mariusz Duda's 'Lunatic Soul' project. The overall impact of the album is not quite as aggressive as successive works, but the diversity makes it one of their most interesting. The quality of songwriting is superb, and consistency throughout makes this one of the best debut releases of the past decade.

The Verdict: An excellent starting point for any Riverside collection.
