5 stars ...before the storm

Supertamp has a great knack for titling their albums, and this is no exception, foreshadowing the commercial success to come with Breakfast in America.

It has all the hallmark traits of the Supertramp album:

1. ultra pop: Give a little bit 2. heartbreaking ballad: Downstream (this must rank with the Beachboy's God Only Knows as greatest rock ballads) 3. nods to progressive rock in Fool's Overture and the title Track

But the one song pointing to Breakfast In America is From Now On.....When Supertramp expressed simple emotions in their lyrical way and combined with their distinctive sound and saxophone solos, they are most effective. This could have been mistaken for a Breakfast piece: a big "orchestral" sound, and harmony that doesnt overwhelm but invite you into the piece.....and most importantly knows how to finish off rather than trail off.

As good as Fool's is, the simple quick instrumental introduction followed by the voices, and the intermingling of sax solos, is better suited to Supertramp.

Pop/rock/jazz poetry at its whymsical best....ah the little guilty pleasures.
