3 stars Listening diary 10th July, 2021: Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear (neo-prog, 1983)

Despite Fish-era Marillion producing two albums in my all time top 20, and despite giving this multiple tries over mutiple eras of my life, and despite loving the Genesis and Van der Graaf Generator records they were clearly emulating here, I still am not really sure I like this one much. Marillion came into music as this strange middle ground between the pomp of prog rock and the rawness of post-punk, and here the combination is in full swing, as Fish screams and shouts his way through 9-minute tracks with few strong melodies. I can appreciate the edge, but Marillion's best moments came from their pop side, which is almost non-existent on this album. The passion is there and the instrumental proficiency is there, but not much of the melody.
