4 stars At this point, I can't really understand the Genesis references (though the Sleeping in Penumbra does have a bit of that style in the beginning and end sections). Musically, this is nothing like Genesis in any way, aside from the fact that they use keyboards, guitar, bass and drums (and mostly a drum machine at that!). The vocals, of course, sound a good deal like Gabriel, but no more so than Fish or any other prog vocalist with a similar voice. You can't fault a person for how their voice sounds, since there is nothing really they can do about it. In any case, I think even the Gabriel similarities are a bit of a stretch.

As to the music, I was hoping this would be an improvement on the last album. In some ways, particularly production, it is. Adding a guitar player with a different style (apparently he was mostly into prog metal before joining up with CC) helps give it some new interest. And it is just as unique and different as the last album. But for some reason I don't like it quite as much. The songs often lack the continuity (albeit of a strange and unusual sort) that I heard on the previous album. There are parts that I love, and some songs that are fantastic (Falling From Sephiroth, Sleeping in Penumbra). Overall, I enjoy the whole thing. So it's hard to put my finger on what is missing or different. It just doesn't absorb me as much as the previous album I suppose.

Still, I like it enough to give it 3.5 stars, and will go ahead and add the extra half star for their sheer creativity and because I love the uncompromising nature of all their albums.
