5 stars Houses of the Holy is arguably Led Zeppelin's most progressive effort, and consequently is my favorite. Perhaps what I like most is the eclecticism they achieved in this album. There is a plethora of styles present as the band is not being contained to the simple rock of their past albums.

You have the classic rocking songs in 'The Song Remains the Same,' 'Dancing Days,' 'D'yer Maker' and 'The Ocean,' the first of which is my personal favorite Zeppelin song. 'The Crunge' explores Grunge, while 'Over the Hills and Far Away' mixes folk and rock seamlessly.

'No Quarter' and 'The Rain Song' are probably the closest the band has ever been to prog. The former is a gentle, with a beautiful soundscape achieved with acoustic guitar and the wonderful mellotron. The latter has the structural diversity of a prog song, as well as some atypical instrumental work, especially with the keyboards.

Though many people believe the band's biggest achievement was Zeppelin IV, I believe it was with Houses of the Holy. This album shows the band toying with different sounds and instruments and composition in a way that is so important for the variety of music.
