OUT & INTAKE

on listening this seems to be exactly what it says on the tin here, a collection of outtakes. i am normally wary of outtake albums for obvious reasons, material left off albums due to lack of space or ideas the band felt didn't work. there are eleven such tracks on this album, a real mixed bag, some live, a few of them do work very well, though most of them are rather eccentric and unremarkable except "cajun mix" which i thought was very good, (very similar in style to the music on the "chronicle of the black sword" album, i don't know if that was recorded during those sessions) and "ejection". side two kicks off with "assassins of allah", which sounded very similar to "hassan i sahba" off the 1977 "quark..." album. when i checked it out it turned out to be a reworked version of that song, though much better in my opinon. the rest of side two is unremarkably eccentric and indulgent, not quite up to the usual high standard of material you expect from hawkwind, sound quality is not exceptional. it's not a poor album by any means,overall i would really only recommend this album for hawkwind fans, collectors and completionists only, therefore two stars.

A collection of unreleased "Hawkwind" tracks which should have remained unreleased. Believe me!

Here is what Dave Broke had to say about it: It was bits and pieces we had hanging around, weird things like Turner Point. Harvey had Cajun Jinx. It was really just to finance us all and keep the whole thing going.

And I fully agree with him. While you have listened to the infect opening ("Turner Point but Flight To Maputo is just as bad), you definitely know that something is going bloody wrong here. It is a real shame for a band of the caliber of "Hawkwind" to have deliberately produced such crap.

Unreleased studio material of the 1982 period as well as some live stuff from 1982 through 1986. A pity for the fans which were fooled by this disgusting album.

There is only one thing to do with this one. Trash it. One star. For the content. For the marketing approach. For everything. Even if the instrumental Cajun Jinx and the live Solitary Mind Games are pretty decent.
