2 stars Malleus Maleficarum is the debut full-length studio album by Dutch death metal pioneers Pestilence. Malleus Maleficarum was released as far back as 1988 and stands as one of the first releases in death metal. The album was released on Roadrunner Records.

The music on the album is not entirely what I call death metal though and thrash metal influences from acts such as Slayer and Possessed are quite obvious in the sound too. None of the songs on the album really stand out to my ears and to be honest I´ve always had a hard time listening to the full album in succession. The musicianship is pretty good and Martin Van Drunen´s distinct brutal wail is introduced to the world. It´s not his best performance though. The production leaves a lot to be desired IMO, but if you like them raw and unpolished I guess this one will do.

Malleus Maleficarum never did much for me and I´d recommend started with Consuming Impulse (1989) if you are a newcommer to Pestilence and forget about this one. Malleus Maleficarum might hold historical value but there´s not much listening pleasure to be had here if you ask me.

2 stars This is the debut album from PESTILENCE and not an impressive one. But back then, it was considered a very good album. Time has moved on.... This album bridges the gap between thrash/speed metal and death metal. It even has some traces of hardcore and punk. Actually; pretty large dosages of ... (read more)
