3 stars "Beyond" is the only demo (there exists a demo from 1989 but I donīt think it was ever released to the public) by Florida technical/progressive extreme metal act Atheist recorded under that monicker before being signed to Active Records who would release Atheistīs debut album "Piece of Time" in November of 1990. "Beyond" was released on the 10th of April 1988. Shortly before the recording of the "Beyond" demo Atheist had changed their band name from R.A.V.A.G.E to Atheist.

When listening to this demo tape itīs understandable that Active Records signed Atheist after only listening to the music contained within because this music must have blown many people away on initial listen. Youīre met with an incredibly powerful and aggressive metallic assault. Artists like Possessed and Death come to mind but this is much more furious and a bit more technical (even though Atheist werenīt yet the technical monster they would become a few years later) than what the two mentioned acts had produced up until then.

"No Truth", "On They Slay" and "Beyond" which would all be featured on "Piece of Time (1990)" are here in demo versions but there are also two tracks on the demo that didnīt make it unto the album in "Choose Your Death" and "Brain Damage". Both are pretty great tracks and could just as well have been on "Piece of Time (1990)" as any of the others.

The musicianship are are on a high level. You can already hear how technically skilled Atheist were this early in their career. Great screaming solos by Randy Burkey, and Kelly Shaeferīs vocals are as distinct sounding and sneering as ever. Steve Flynnīs drumming is tight and aggressive and Roger Pattersonīs bass playing inventive and powerful.

The sound production is very raw but in this case that really enhances the brutality of the music. The savage sound suits the music well.

Demos usually only appeal to the hardcore fans of an artist and especially demos from those days were usually not that well produced. In this case I will give a 3 star (60%) rating though because this is a bit of a gem and an early example of technical/progressive death metal.

3 stars There are demos and then there are ATHEIST demos! BEYOND is one of those rare demos that shows how proficient this band was from the start. The material on here is so strong and of album quality that three out of the five tracks made it onto the debut album "Piece Of Time." "Brain Damage" also appeared on the "On They Slay" demo leaving "Choose Your Death" the only track to never go any further. The music on here is just superb! I just love the raw and unfiltered sound that this demo exhibits. I find that this raw sound works so well with a naturally talented metal act like ATHEIST with their passion burners turned up full blast. This demo has been remastered and is available as bonus tracks on the remastered version of "Piece Of Time." This is so excellent I actually prefer these versions to the better produced album versions!
