2 stars Paroxysmal Holocaust is Therionīs debut demo cassette tape. The demo was released in April 1989 and was limited to 600 Copies. Therion was a very different band in 1989 than they are today and as most demos Paroxysmal Holocaust is only for the diehard fans. Had Therion continued to play this style they would never have been a part of PA.

The music is old school Swedish Death metal which means that Therionīs music on Paroxysmal Holocaust can by compared to fellow Swede bands like Nihilist ( who would later become Entombed), Dismember, Unleashed, Grave, Edge of Sanity and Carnage. Swedish Death Metal before it became harmonic and melodic in the mid nineties with bands like In Flames and Soilwork being the new prolific Swedish death metal acts. The music is primitive and the vocals are deep growls.

The musicianship is untight and itīs obvious that this is a first demo attempt.

The production is very primitive and raw. Pretty noisy and muddy but funny enough I seem to be able to hear whatīs happening most of the time anyway. But Iīm used to listen to metal, and I guess the general visitor on PA will have a hard time enjoying this sound, but who knows ? There might be someone out there who doesnīt know that he likes this before he hears it.

Even though the music is primitive and the production is noisy I still enjoy this demo somewhat but I do recognise that itīs only for the diehard fans so a small 2 star rating is probably in place for Paroxysmal Holocaust. Iīm sure there are not many fans of Swedish old school death metal on PA but if youīre curious this is a good example of the style even though itīs a badly produced one. The reason for not giving this demo 1 star is because I partially enjoy it but itīs probably more a 1.5 rating than a 2 star rating but Iīll round it up.
