4 stars Released simultaneously with the exciting Snowflake Midnite album, this is available as a digital format only. This is not unlike Mercury Rev in surprising a few in this case releasing two seperate albums at the same time. Strange Attractor basically is a very good album made up of instrumental tracks with some interspersed vocal overlays from time to time very reminiscent of God Speed You Black Empeor dialogue edits. Musically though very unique and the moods could be described as haunting, melancholic, beautiful and trippy! There is something special about Strange Attractor and after numerous listens I still can't quite put my finger on it. The album title perhaps the best hint.' Pure Joie de Solitude' is exquisite' as it takes you on a three minute trip.' Nocturne for Norwood' has some interesting vocal overlays and the opener ' Love is Pure' has great driving energy. This could well be one of the highlight releases for 2008. Excellent music and highly recommended.

2 stars Strange Attractor is the eigth full-length studio album by American pop/ rock act Mercury Rev. The album was released as an MP3 companion album to Mercury Revīs seventh full-length studio album Snowflake Midnight (2008). You can download Strange Attractor on the bandīs official homepage. Strange Attractor has also been released as a bonus LP on the vinyl release of Snowflake Midnight.

Snowflake Midnight is my favorite from the band with its ambient and atmospheric pop / rock tunes so I was pretty curious to how Strange Attractor would sound. Well itīs not leftower tracks thatīs for sure. The style is atmospheric and ambient instrumental pop/ rock and as such pretty different form the more conventional vers/ chorus build songs on Snowflake Midnight. I canīt say that Iīm wildy impressed by the music on this album. I think the album would have been better with more rythms. If there had been more songs like Loop, Lisse, Loop I would have enjoyed the album more.

Strange Attractor is not a bad album though. The production is really good and the idea to make a very different album compared to their other albums is good too. This is just not a music style I find very interesting and my rating is 2.5 stars.
