3 stars 'Broken, Beat & Scarred' - Metallica (Single)

In 2008, Metallica surprised all of their fans by releasing what can be considered to be their first 'good' album in almost 20 years. This track is the first one on the album that I have listened to, and I have to say; it's a sure step up from 'St. Anger.' Disregarding the obvious issues with production, Metallica seems to have energy again; a trait of theirs which really hasn't been seen since '...And Justice For All.'

On this singles promotion, there are a few live performances thrown in for good measure, but the main attraction is obviously the late material. 'Broken, Beat & Scarred' is a pretty heavy track that revolves around a Hammett riff and some of the best rhythm playing I've heard on a Metallica song. James Hetfield's voice (which I usually don't like too much) works pretty well here, although the lyrics aren't much to praise ( what don't kill ya, make ya more strong! )

The video filmed for this song doesn't have any real concept to it; just Metallica playing live and their fans going crazy for it. While 'Broken, Beat & Scarred' is definately not as memorable as some of their classic tracks a la 'Master Of Puppets,' I find this to be a real return to form for the band, and a great introduction to 'Death Magnetic.'
