3 stars Ulcerate is the debut demo CD by New Zealand progressive death metal act Ulcerate. The demo was independently released in 2003. The four songs on the 13:28 minute long demo were later featured as the last four songs in the The Coming of Genocide (2006) compilation album.

The music on the demo is brutal death metal with deep growling vocals. Ulcerateīs future trademark dissonant riffing and progressive approach to songwriting isnīt that developed yet but the musicianship is tight and if you enjoy brutal death metal in the vein of Suffocation and the likes this is not a bad place to invest you money. Just donīt expect the innovation to be in the high seat.

Allthough this is a demo the sound quality is very good and this is of course an extra plus on an already professional promo release.

Ulcerate still needed to find their own sound at this early point in their career but this demo is actually rather enjoyable even with the lack of originality. A 2.5 - 3 star rating is deserved.
