I am not particularly familiar with Gordon Giltrap's vast catalogue, only some of his classic albums from the latter half of the 70's. The present album was recorded in the 90's and opens with a very nice re-make of what probably is Giltraps's most well-known piece, Heartsong. This version of the song features guest performances by Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe of Yes, and Brian May of Queen! Being an enormous fan of both Yes and Queen, I was very interested to hear this (I loved when Howe and May played together on the brilliant Flamenco-style middle section of Queen's Innuendo). Wakeman's distinctive piano playing and Howe's and May's unique guitar sounds are instantly recognizable and add great value to this already nice little instrumental.

The title of the album refers to television and the contents are compositions written for, or appearing on, various TV programs (including the aforementioned Heartsong, that appeared on a BBC programme called The Holiday Programme). The rest of the album is in a somewhat more laid back mode, but it is by no means a relaxation CD. It is not just Giltrap playing his acoustic guitar, but various other instruments can also be heard, including electronic keyboards, drums, bass, and electric guitars. Though, no vocals. There are subtle hints of Classical, New-Age, Folk, and Jazz music.

Music For The Small Screen is a very pleasant listen, but it is perhaps not very memorable. It holds up well compared to the string of 70's albums I've heard from Gordon Giltrap.
