3 stars "Lady With" is an interesting Jazz/Rock fusion band from Paris, France formed by musician and composer Camille Petit (also from "Ghost Rhythms"). To date, the band has released 2 full length studio albums since 2014, along with 2 EPs. "Alternate Cakes" is the name of the 2nd EP released in November of 2019. The band line-up for this album consists of Petit on keyboards along with Sarah Baroux (voice), Gregoir Bette (guitar, bass), avier Gelard (drums), Tom Namias (guitar), Maxime Theibaut (soprano sax) and Antoine Villedieu (violin). The EP is made up of 9 tracks, 4 of which are alternate takes (or cakes in this case), and the total run time is just over 27 minutes.

"Upside Down Cake" consists of various piano-like keyboard lines playing together harmonically. "Dream Cake" adds in guitar, drums, bass and keyboards for a full-band track, light and airy jazz/rock fusion. Soon a violin comes in and then some wordless vocals. The music is a happy but soft jazz based around chord sequences and a loose melodic structure. "Hidden Cake" begins with sparse piano notes with another piano line coming in later, and then other instruments get added in playing harmonically at first, then becoming more tense and contradicting. It quiets down again to a more minimal feel, with a nice, sparkly feel until a thumping bass line comes in and again, other instruments come in creating a full sound. "Outcake" begins with echoing guitar chords and sparse piano. More wordless vocals create a tenser atmosphere and the simple notes get a darker tone to them as percussive sounds come in, the music builds a little as drums create more movement, then it all backs off. "Cake Five" begins with the violin with a short intro, but the keys quickly takes over with more sparkly lines playing along almost "fugue-like". Eventually, the violin comes in, there are more wordless vocals and the music crescendos.

The next four tracks are alternate versions of the preceding tracks, beginning with "Upside Down Cake". The sound is completely different now with different instruments playing what were simply separate piano lines before. This time it includes a sax, guitar, subdued vocals and such. "Dream Cake" starts with the sax again in place of the keys, and the other instruments slowly get added in. The music has even more jazzy tone to it, especially with the sax added in. Also, later, the music gets an orchestral feel to it with effects from the synths, becoming almost cinematic by the end of the track. "Hidden Cake" begins like the other version, but with sax and piano playing together, then separating into different parts, later becoming dissonant as in the first version, but the sax adds better dimension to the track. Pretty much everything else remains the same here, even the part with the thumping bass coming in. "Outcake" again brings in the sax this time with the light guitar. Basically, the alternative versions add the sax in, plus a few other substitutions, yet it is quite interesting how it changes the mood and texture of the tracks, almost to where they sound like completely different songs.

This album is quite interesting and is nice to put on for some soft, background jazz, but for those that want to dissect the parts, you will find there is a lot more going on here than what it might seem. Either way, it is an enjoyable EP, one that progressive jazz lovers will enjoy more than anything, but enjoyable nonetheless. 3 stars.
