4 stars The album title 'Ruder' could be filed here as the German expression for a rudder. And sure, Pierre Vervloesem is changing tack a bit somehow, for what it's worth. I've been a quiet follower of his work so far. Being rather fascinated by the experimental attitude offered in recent times, but mostly having problems to reach for the necessary access to his work finally. This new album however has catapulted him to the top of my review list. Concerning the working title again, Pierre is pointing some reference to his 2005 'Rude' album, I didn't manage to hear 'til today. Recorded solely in one day in the same way. Important to know also, all the instruments, quite a lot, are played by himself on this album. If I get it right due to the known terrible COVID-19 circumstances.

This reveals that he's an excellent drummer too, besides the prominent guitar and keyboard duties he's providing. The songs are showcasing a more straightforward rocking flow, and proper groove all over. Soaring and sawing guitars as well as fine backing Mellotron layers. Yet exemplarily to mention Phagoracismic, my album highlight so far. The following Puntagressism then is getting closer to his 'normal' attitude though, unpredictable behaviour, furious, weird expression. It's hard to describe the complete ride, definitely an exciting thing. Pierre Vervloesem once more proves to be true to his approach, to surprise the listener with every new album.
