Collaborators/Experts Reviews

Review by Rivertree
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Honorary Collaborator / Band Submissions
4 stars This band was formed by diverse established musicians some years ago. Each of them derives from the fabulous Italian Prog scene, in one way or another, which means they are, respectively have been working for other prolific bands too. That approach does not necessarily lead to something inventive, occasionally experienced though. Also wanted is a proper portion of innovation and inspiration, quite needless to say. Absolutely relevant, or what? 'Refusés' was released via the acclaimed MaRaCash Records label. And the album comes as a typical Rock Progressivo Italiano production. Some preview hints required? Though not always 100% stable Simone Cecchini (Il Bacio Della Medusa) overall appears with an expressive vocal performance. In native Italian language certainly. Plus prominent symphonic tinged Hammond as well as Mellotron furthermore, provided by Alfio Costa (Tilion, Daal). We can also see Marco Freddi (Prowlers) on the drums again, as well as Guglielmo Mariotti (The Watch, Taproban) who is serving bass, guitar and other duties.

Compared to the previous 2016 'Spaventapasseri' debut album solely second guitarist Simone Coloretti (Egoband) is new to the fold. Some sculptures designed by Beppe Corna have been the inspirational origin for Cecchini, who is responsible for concept and lyrics. Grotesque, alientated faces respectively masks are standing for social exclusion and other deformations regarding the functionality of the current society. This even leads into a telephone call with Wladimir Putin, yeah! Possibly evolving into a rollercoaster ride? Time consuming to explore the lyrics, though at least music-wise this is the case indeed. Let me also highlight Desaparecido Italiano with its special melancholic mood, plus the mandolin and mellotron. 'Refusés' is a rounded RPI affair apart from that. Enjoyable from the first to the last minute, no need to list more details. Just get your own impression and have a listen at the label bandcamp. There are a lot of bands underway in these days who are trying to live up the genre, due to this fine compositions FUFLUNS are definitely ranking at the top of my list.
