SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Prog Metal Team
2 stars There was a time, aeons ago, when Froese and Tangerine Dream re-invented their sound with each new release, often more then once in a year. This 2004 album however proves the stagnation that happened ever since, showing an artist stuck in a formula ever since the digital equipment was introduced in the early 80's. "Dalinetopia" is not a bad album but it sounds exactly like "Stuntman", "Pinnacles", "White Eagle" or "Underwater Sunlight". And this comparison extends to the same lame machine rhythms and the easy-listening songwriting.

We're off with a good start on "Daleroshima", an agreeable sequencer piece with the helium-boosted sound of Froese's "Stuntman". "Dalozapata" is a whole lot less, featuring cheesy electronic drums and uninteresting elevator-music melodies. More easy going-sounds follows on "Dalamuerte" starting with acoustic guitar and joined by calm electric guitar soloing that reminds of Andy Latimer rather then Froese's old wild style. The orchestral and choir type synths are kitsch but somehow fitting. "Dalerotica" is - as the title aptly describes - soft-porn soundtrack material. Pleasant enough for a listen. "Dalisesquador" concludes what would once have been a full-length TD album. Very melodic with a mild sequencer accompaniment. Could have been on "White Eagle" this.

We continue with "Daluminaction" which doesn't add anything to the sonic palette that was exposed on the previous couple of tracks. With its 9.24 minutes and after the half hour of pleasantness that preceded this track challenges my indulgence for this type of music. The new age of "Dalagalor" is too much of a challenge and rates as entirely forgettable for me. The deep resounding bass beats of "Daluna" raise my hopes that something interesting might be on hand, but the beat is quickly drowned under the same old sonic tapestry, which is continued on "Dalysisiphus". The concluding title track is a bit darker with a low-key 90s world beat and dreamy choir and orchestral synths.

"Dalinetopia" is a very long album that is simply too inoffensive to hold my attention for more then 20 minutes, but seen within the large number of accessible TD products from the last 3 decades this isn't a bad album at all. As it turned out, this was a whole lot better then what I expected. 2.5 stars, not good enough to be placed next to the good releases from TD's early 80's period.

5 stars The best solo album from Edgar W. Froese after more than 10 years! A great sound journey through the landscapes of Salvador Dalis surrealistic paintings - an homage to the extraordinary painter. The tracks are full of energy and dynamism, some are floating like a river, others have a beautiful ... (read more)
