Emme Phyzema biography
Emme PHYZEMA is a colorful avant / brutal prog multi-instrumentalist recluse from Ohio, USA. After keeping to herself for over a decade, Emme recently began the process of cleaning up a ridiculous mess of material and has released two albums this year (2019) with many more to go.

Emme's uncompromising musical arrangements sway between overwhelmingly obsessive, carelessly catchy and all around zany. Although aggressive & noisy at times, her anxiety inducing melodies are paradoxically pleasant. The most consistent roots in Emme Phyzema's sound are the layered melodic theme / motif references hidden in her music for the dedicated listener; her love of folk, classical & avant / RIO shines through a shrouded veil of self absorbed insanity.

It?s certainly a wild ride.

Dispelling Differences
Emme Phyzema RIO/Avant-Prog

Review by A Crimson Mellotron

2 stars Emme Phyzema is an American multi-instrumentalist that is approaching her thirties. Claiming that she has been composing music for the last 10 year but releasing none to the world, she most likely has a good lot of material, as one can observe from her release rate.

Most likely her influences are well rooted in metal, avant-garde, and progressive music, and who knows what more! At least these are, in my opinion, most well observed in this debut album by hers.

With all that cleared, I must say I find this album incredibly messy. I get that this is sort of the objective, given the sub-genre tag she is assigned to, but things are taken too far. In fact, they are taken so far that it makes the album not an enjoyable experience for me.

Being mostly instrumental, there is some serious shredding and banging that goes nowhere. The rare occasions of vocals do not complement the chaotic song structures as well. I also seem not to enjoy her phrasing. What I am talking about ca be heard on tracks 4, 8, and 9 which in my ears are almost unlistenable.

The concise structure of the album though, makes it somewhat of an easier listen. I believe that the main problem is her desire to show off all that she is capable of, because one thing I can draw as a conclusion from 'Dispelling Differences' is that she is very skilled and precise in her playing. However, the seemingly brainstormed constellation of ideas has taken over the order and the architecture of this collection of songs.

4 stars A colourful, vivacious album. "A Series of Related Dreams" was released as Emme PHYZEMA's fourth creation in April 2020, almost at the same time as her third album "Chronic Bronchitis". She says this stuff focus upon such 'dream' or 'sleep' enough that she might create and produce with her strong intention for making it dreamy an psychedelic ... easily imagined. Yes, in spite of her last offensive, supersonic album, this work sounds full of melodic, dramatic, and psychic atmosphere in a modulating manner. Such a musical phenomenon would happen not due to her change of heart but another motivation of hers, I guess.

Thanks to the first track "Eighty-Four", you can get immersed in her mysterious melody brilliance. Strongly with ethnic movements (leaning towards sorta Japanese Folk named Enka really), repetitive, hallucinogenic, but sometimes dynamic, eccentric phrases catch your heart strictly. Based upon complicated rhythmic elements and melodic kinetics, the following track "Transmission" amazes you so badly. Wondering where you would be taken by this crazy stuff. Of course, what a fantasy kind of lyrical battle between her piano and guitar plays in "Ode to F's" is. Beautiful gorgeous melodic lines should knock you.

"Croakaine" is a deeply hard, psychic track despite a 2 and half a minute short one, full of strict guitar barks and serious drumming. Every heavy / metal fan could love it."Happy...ish" reminds me of Le Silo's funny, funky, and drunken style of sound. An enjoyable song filled with neat but destructive moments makes you happy-ish definitely (yeah I'm happy too, needless to say). "Paranoid Delusion", actually my favourite one, sounds quite illusive via every single weird phrase. You should keep your mind in a good dream just in case you lose yourself by this paranoiac, delusive stuff.

"According To" is another elegant, obsessive one. Guess she would have explain her dreammare and fantasia through such a fantastic track like this. "Ode to Those with Lethargy" is slightly so loose that you would let the big tension out of your shoulders temporarily, but it might be sorta notification of toughness ... In "Veridian City" she might've launched a pain of 'wake-up' outside of her inner world I imagine? With the last keyboard-oriented distortion "Wewlf" you could support all of her mind.

Finally, let me say please that it should be important for her not what but how she show and express via her inner world. In this sense we could mention this album melodically stand upon the opposite side of the previous one but psychologically in the similar vein. Opinions?

3 stars Raunchy, offbeat & Heavy/Metal Rock tainted with enough tempo and instrument selection discrepancies and songwriting whims to fit into the Avant Prog/Rock in Opposition lands.

Emme Phyzema - Dispelling Differences , an 11 track release (2019), is, if not groundbreaking as such, quiet daring. But for this Progressive sub-genre´s standards it is not that surprising.

Its music composition, to set it somewhere, runs freely from Zappaesque structures to King Crimson´s eeriest moments to OH´s Heavy Metalness to other Prog fellow´s subtle references (EL&P, Diamanda Galas, etc) and her own kind of frantic madness, but besides impeccable performances and very good musical ideas, something quiet falls short.

Like an emerging artist (or anti-artist) she is on the making, it shows, but if taken without hasty expectations or far fetched pretentions or proportions she truly is a promising one and hopefully in the future will develop an "all hers" musical language.

As for now 3 PA´s stars.

5 stars Eccentric, complicated but beautiful, concentrated.

A Columbus-based artist Emme PHYZEMA has come up into sudden prominence as a one-lady experimental rock / metal project. Her eponymous creation is filled with crazy slushy metallic architecture sometimes with weird Zeuhlish texture or sometimes with classical sound orbit. Basically there is full of sound dissection like the horrible sleeve pic, but another solemn, gorgeous melody brilliance beneath her soundscape. You can feel her promising musical diversity and incredible talent as a multi- instrumentalist.

And it's crazy impressive colourful variation of sound essence can be heard here and there via not only the whole album but also every track. Of course the rhythmic basis created her hands has no deviation nor sagging moment. Critically strict instrumental unification, crystallization should drive you into kinda wild party, without feeling any eccentricity in an eventual manner. It's pretty great you listen to her entire production from the beginning until the end without breathing ... on the contrary, the epilogue "The Void Is A Porno" is splendidly beautiful and a bit tragic, that will move you to tears.

Obviously this album will be one of the best in 2019 for me ... anyway my fave is a short track "Partial Sequence" featuring Emme's sincere and "charming" voices through that I can find her cuteness. Thank you!
