Mt. Mountain biography
MT. MOUNTAIN is a five-piece band hailing from Perth, Australia. They deal in a sprawling, motorik psychedelic rock sound that journeys between tranquil, drone-like meditations and raucous, full-throttle wig-outs. Taking cues from Krautrock pioneers like Neu! and Can whilst existing in a similar world to contemporaries like Moon Duo, Kikagaku Moyo and Minami Deutsch, MT. MOUNTAIN are formidable torchbearers of the minimal-is-maximal tradition.

With a number of EPs and singles and three albums behind them the quintet have picked up a formidable reputation in their homeland and further afield. Generally the band's sound is born out of long improvised jams. Hence naturally much of their current album 'Centre' was recorded live, to capture the band at their most freewheeling.

4 stars Now literally this has forwarded them to the centre of the psychedelic realm, with 99 percent at least. The music is so great, attractive ... the careless album cover art on the contrary ... hell, I don't get it. Looks like a snapshot of a mill game tablet somehow. Form and content ultimately have to match, or what? They seemingly do not care about that. This Perth, Australia, based five-piece combo is releasing psychedelic guitar dominated music since 2013, hence they are not newcomer to the scene in Australia. Consisting of nine wonderful tracks like a string of pearls, their fourth album is released via the United Kingdom based Fuzz Club label again. Live in the studio recordings, where the song structures inititally emerged from extended jams, I'm quite sure. From the conceptional point of view Stephen Bailey (organ, vocals, flute) had a lot of impact. Thematically 'Centre' is dealing with faith in general, somewhat influenced by experiences with religious issues from the past.

Yet again the sound is dominated by sensitive guitar skills. Restrained backing keyboard respectively synthesizer patterns are adding more depth to the songs. The rhythm work is occasionally taking some Krautrock cues, this becomes apparent for example on the fine hypnotic opener Tassels. Some songs are floating towards a psychedelic pop nature, let's say akin to Tame Impala a bit. Though the progressive rock fundament is implemented basically, exemplarily to name the awesome Peregrination. Furthermore the instruments are always complemented by warm charming vocals. 'Centre' is balm for the soul, definitely. The band is providing a wonderful mostly relaxed flow during 44 minutes playing time.
