The Zone biography
The Zone is an experimental jazz and rock group founded in New York City by Italian keyboard player and classical music and film composer Daniele del Monaco, assembled for the purpose of playing a concept album of the same name, based on Andrei Tarkovsky's film Stalker and Farid ud-Din Attar's poem The Conference Of The Birds. Besides Del Monaco, the band consists of Fay Victor (vocals), Marco Cappelli (guitar), Ken Filiano (bass) and Satoshi Takeishi (drums), all of whom have a history of performing avant-garde jazz and free improvisation. The Zone's self-titled debut, recorded between 2018 and 2019 and released in 2021 by Studio III Recordings, is characterized by the unique coupling of Victor's distinctive traditional jazz vocals with a heavy, driving and ominous avant-prog sound.

5 stars While some members are residing in New York it looks like the Brooklyn Cluster Zones have been the advance directive for the corporate identity of this band, maybe. Anyway, THE ZONE was constituted in order to bring a concept into shape that was worked out by classically trained composer and keyboarder Daniele Del Monaco from Italy. The lyrics, the compositions, the album context, it's all his creation. Nonetheless this is also drawing on an ancient Persian poem entitled 'The Conference Of The Birds'. Hence here we have seven chapters full of references and symbolism, each of them represented by one song. That said, the album comes with rhyme and reason for sure. The other seasoned musicians, speaking of Ken Filiano (upright bass), Marco Cappelli (guitar), and drummer Satoshi Takeishi, are all rooted in the Avantgarde Jazz scene more or less. And finally you will experience the soulful voice of Fay Victor, having a great impact too concerning the successful result in general. By the way, I would claim to observe certain similarities to Nicole Johnson (The Paradox Twin).

This will need some time, and your full concentration! But then, at some point, it's nearly impossible to release from the gripping flow again. It optionally rocks, meanders along in the same way, partially freaks out, but also bears enough charming moments. Eminently cinematic, and musically the album's eclecticism is grounded in a wide range concerning mode of expression as well as music styles, as this is covering Jazz, Zeuhl, Avantgarde, Space Rock, Punk, and more. A minor issue to complain, okay, next time, would you please choose a more challenging cover picture? Highly deserved. If I really should emphasize a piece of music at all, let me take the track Into The Zone. Wonderful! Fay Victor is literally and virtually entering a higher dimension (zone) here! Treat yourself to this extraordinary item. The self-named album, released in October 2021 and available on double vinyl as well as compact disc, offers a very ambitious and appealing music experience. Such a gorgeousness does not very frequently enter my musical realm, 5 stars with ease ...
