ViaMedia biography
ViaMedia is a British-Norwegian band that writes, records and performs music that is adventurous, creative and seeks to avoid any form of orthodoxy.

ViaMedia is the creation of Karl Yngvar Dale and Tore Dimmestol. Karl and Tore are originally from the picturesque Norwegian town of Ålesund. Ålesund's beautiful scenery and frequently poor weather has provided ample inspiration and time for them to hone their composition and musician skills.

Tore and Karl have played in bands together on and off since their teenage years, releasing records and playing outdoor festivals to audiences of thousands at the age of seventeen. Today's ViaMedia is a reboot of a popular Bergen-based band from the late 80s and early 90s. That band was synth-driven and heavily influenced by David Sylvian/Japan, Talk Talk, Ultravox etc. Today's ViaMedia is far more adventurous and eclectic. More prog. ViaMedia performed live and on Norwegian TV and radio. They also recorded and appeared on radio and TV under the name of Ikea Akbar, their progressive house music alias.

In the mid 90s Tore released the electronic album "Bird Colony" on Norwegian record label Origo Sound under the name of Eyeman Reel (for obvious reasons the record company would not use Ikea Akbar). Karl contributed piano and the Grieg-inspired track "Veil" to the album, production was by the well known New Age artist Erik Wollo.

Karl currently lives in the Norwegian town of Molde, Tore lives in Henley-On-Thames, UK.

ViaMedia has for the last two years been working on a new album which is called "Bridge of Sighs", which was released April 2024 on all streaming services and Bandcamp. The album was preceded by the EP "Acres Green", released March 2024.

Much of the composition and recording process has therefore been done remotely, in their respective home studios, collaborating using Logic Pro projects. They have combined this with long stints of rehearsals and time spent recording, mixing and mastering in John Mitchell's Outhouse Studios with Craig & John.

ViaMedia is: Karl Yngvar Dale - vocals, bass, double bass, keyboards, acoustic guitar and Tore Dimmestol - vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, Fx

They have worked with some very talented and like-minded people, such as:

Craig Blundell (Steve Hackett, Steven Wilson, Frost*) - drums and percussion

John Mitchell (It Bites, Arena, Kino, Frost*, Lonely Robot, John Wetton Band) - production, ...

4 stars I've listened to the new album by ViaMedia several times now, and these are my impressions so far.

The duo Dimmestøl/Dale are not afraid to challenge the listener, both musically and lyrically. This is advanced and complex music that demands a lot (and this is coming from someone who loves Dream Theater). It's spiced with beautiful vocal harmonies, lovely chords, and lots of delightful synth and fretless bass.

Press your AirPods firmly into your ears, lean back in your comfy chair, and close your eyes. Only then does such music get the element it needs to express itself and reach the listener. And most importantly; LISTEN. Not with your ears, but with your senses and body. Let the music pass through your ears and deep into your brain, that's where the magic happens!

My favorite so far is "Aphrodite," if I must highlight one. Not because it's so much better than the others, but it has a beautiful chromatic part (maybe not the correct musical terminology) where it sings, among other things, "We flutter like the leaves" and the subsequent modulation of the same section. Here, Tore shines with both singing and guitar playing. Beautiful. The instrumental favorite is "Dust" (there's really only one instrumental on the album?). This works well as a "Thank you for now, see you again" song.

ViaMedia; well-crafted, beautifully produced and played, lovely songs. If I can wish for something for the next album, it would be to tone down the complexity a bit and cultivate the harmonics more. Well, I'm a sucker for pompous, melodic music.

Thank you for the music!

Thanks to cristi for the artist addition. and to projeKct for the last updates
