Jacopo Galli biography
Multi-instrumentalist/singer Jacopo GALLI has always vowed a great admiration for the metal heavyweights (FATES WARNING, DREAM THEATER, SHADOW GALLERY). After getting a degree in engineering, he fulfilled his long-time dream and wrote, recorded, produced and mixed his very own album at home, entitled "Timedrops". The result is surprisingly good and quite mature for a first effort, even it lacks the production sheen of, say, a DREAM THEATER.

The main influence that comes to mind upon hearing "Timedrops" is FATES WARNING. It features an interesting variety of styles, time signatures and keys. GALLI balances out heavy and calmer passages nicely, without overdoing breaks or breaking up the flow of the songs. He also likes to put his best melodies after strange atonal sections - perhaps a technique he learned from YES (cf. "Relayer"). Finally, his technical abilities are faultless, particularly on the guitar. The weeknesses: lots of great musical ideas on this album aren't developed to the fullest; the vocals also seem to get lost in the mix. This is nevertheless a laudable first effort and will hopefully attract the attention of a major label/distributor. Such talent and technical ability command respect and definitely deserve wider recognition.

Recommended if you're into the bands named above, but RUSH and YES fans will also appreciate.

Jacopo Galli Progressive Metal

4 stars A little gem that goes rather to unnoticed in prog circles

Jacopo Galli is a song writter, composer and multi instrumntalist from Italy who released a single album so far in 2003 named Timedrops. Besides that he wrote all the music on this album, he playes at each instrument features here and he mixed and produce the album aswell. Quite a surprise for me this little album, very hard to find, but worth every second. Musicaly speaking is a cross between symphonic prog with prog metal leanings, don't expect to be a rough prog metal album influenced by DT or others alike. The originality of this album is high, but the voice ruins to be much more that is seen today. If he hired a proper vocalist this album realy were something elese, a true treasure in prog metal field. The music is very well written from mellow arrangements to a more metalized ones, but always keeping the proportion in good measure not to become boring or unenjoyble. Great are the key passages who interludes like gloves with his guitar chops, very intristing ones, and quite unmatch in places. Ideas are many here and good all the time, what gives to the album a low view is his voice, who is dull without any range, he tries here to do the best but rarely succeded, if it were an instrumental album then for sure I would give a higher rate, that is already realy high. All the pieces are winners, maybe dreg down a little by low budget production, but if you skip this thing out you will find some very unique and intristing ideas that result in a very enjoyble album in a little less then an hour. 3.5 rounded to 4, because he worth it and is to underrated here aswell on other sites. Cool cover art aswell.

2 stars The musicianship of this work, entire played by him same, is good, the composition of the tracks is not bad, the level of the production is good , but the agreements are poor, the vocal lines are badly and is felt the lack of a professional singer (sings the same Jacopo Galli). So I give 2 stars of encouragement for this italian artist, but it must improve much in the particular. I recommend this work, that is not bad, but not good, to people who likes prog metal, but do not expect a masterpiece! W l'Italia!
