Salis biography
The brothers Salis, Antonio and Francesco from S.Giusta, Oristano in Sardinia, began their career in the first half of 60's under the name of Barrittas, releasing a bunch of singles until the end of the decade. Produced by their elder cousin Lucio, they changed name to Salis'n'Salis in 1969, but by the time their first album was released the name has changed again to Salis. Their debut album, Sa vida ita est, came in 1971, a very good mix of pop music and slightly progressive rock arrangements, but went totally unnoticed. In 1974 a second album was recorded, this was in fact a solo album by Antonio Salis; one of the first quadraphonic records from Italy, and released by EMI subsidiary CiPiTi, this was later re-released on the small local label La Strega, owned by Lucio Salis (that was also the lyricist for all the Salis songs). Again a lightweight pop/prog album, much more than the first, this had much in common with another group from Sardinia, Gruppo 2001. Antonio Salis was helped on the album by his brother Francesco and Gianni Serra on guitars, Dario Baldan Bembo on keyboards and drummers Andy Surdy and Furio Bozzetti. After five years a new quartet was formed, and a third album appeared, called Dopo il buio la luce. A totally different album from the previous two, this has a much more keyboard-led and prog-inspired sound, being almost entirely instrumental and with extended jazz-rock influenced parts like in the long Rapsodia per emigrazione and Dopo il buio...la luce. This last album is the best one for the progressive fans, but it wasn't successful and the group sadly disappeared again after 1980.

Review by Jeff Carney

4 stars One of those quite brilliant albums that might fly under the radar at a place like this as it is reviewed in the context of its value as a "prog" album.

Its value as a "prog" album was never its point in 1974, to be sure. Hence, to judge it within that context is surely insufficient.

This is an album full of gorgeous songwriting that will please just about any fan of acoustic guitar based rock songs. Backed by a fairly typical '70s arsenal of sonic goodness like organ, elec. piano, string synth, flute and restrained, melodic electric guitar, the thing here is the *songs*.

And the songs are damn good.

Very much rooted in the Italian song traditions that often seem to make the Italian scene so much deeper than what might be filed under "prog" decades after the fact, this is an album that shifts through a variety of moods with a logical flow that makes it album listening. However, I will say that the opening track, "Salis Adios," is positively addictive and might yield more repeated spins than the album as a whole. In fact, this album would probably be right on the 3.5 stars line for me and a debate might ensue as to whether 3 stars is a sufficient rating, but that opening track just crushes down any barrier and pushes it well toward a more appropriate 4 star rating.

Available from BTF and packaged in one of their mini lp sleeves, tapes are presumably lost as this is nicely mastered from vinyl. And it really sounds quite nice. Great, laid back listening.

4 stars Salis was the surname of two brothers from Santa Giusta, Oristano in Sardinia, bassist Antonello and guitarist Francesco. The origins of the band can be found in late-60's as Salis'n'Salis, but by the first album ''Sa vida ita est'', a Psych/Pop Rock affair from 1971, it was already shortened to Salis.A new brief line-up was formed in 1972, when the duo had moved to Cremona, soon to return to Sardinia with bassist Pino Martini and drummer Salvatore Garau, later the rhythm section of Stormy Six.In 1974 a new album comes out, entitled ''Seduto sull'alba a guardare'', being more of an Antonello Salis solo release than a group effort, with a totally different crew.Five years later Salis return with a full-prog release, ''Dopo il buio la luce'' on IAF, with Antonio Lotta on keys and Antonio Sardu on drums.

Surprisingly the album contains all the basic fundamentals of the Italian Prog scene despite being release at a time when Progressive Rock was just shadow of the past. The style is split between great Symphonic Rock passages and virtuosic Jazz-Rock performances, being largely instrumental with only some space for vocals on ''Diablo'' and the closing ''Yankee Go Home''.''Dopo il buio la luce'' offers plenty of great breaks and technical interplays, heavily based on Lotta's keyboards and Francesco Salis' guitars with an alternation between parts with a romantic flavor and professional music textures with a technical diversity. The guitars have a strong jazzy taste overall with some fantastic solos througout, while Lotta is willing to offer a varied work of jazzy electric pianos, symphonic moog synths and great piano interludes.Especially the rich interplays follow one another with a termendous ability by the group to create memorable tunes, often supported by an orchestral grandieur. The overall sound of the band resembles to the lines of acts from early to mid-70's and a mix between the aesthetics of FOCUS, GENESIS, BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO, PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI and RETURN TO FOREVER seems like a good description.

Salis did not escape the luck of all those late-70's progressive groups and split up a year later. The two brothers continiued being part of the music industry and also released the tape ''Signora del porto'' in 1988, featuring re-recordings of old compositions, along with a brand new CD work in 2003 entitled ''Statue e fiori''.Unfortunately death would separate them, as Francesco sadly passed away in 2007.

Among the greatest Italian Prog material ever to be recorded during the second half of the 70's, ''Dopo il buio la luce'' is an album full of great inspirational moments and different imaginative colors, always stuffed with the familiar Italian atmosphere.Highly recommended.

2 stars As mentioned already in their biography this album was still more a pop / prog one by Antonio Salis and his band. Nice melodic songs but definitely not anything to be looked for by a prog collector. Only their last one which had been recorded with a completely changed outfit was an interesting one with a significantly higher portion of progressive elements. At least occasionally there are quite nice flute tunes although those are not sufficient to balance for the mostly too much lightweighted song compositions. Nevertheless a pleasant listen for the general lover of 60s/70s Italian pop music and certainly better than most of the stuff that had been released in pop during this era.

On this site here not to be rated higher than "for collectors only"!

4 stars The name of this Italian progrock band is derived from the two Salis brothers, Francesco and Antonio. The music on their fourth album from 1979 sounds like dynamic symphonic jazzrock and reminds me of the splendid Spanish band Mezquita, it's also based upon captivating interplay between fiery and powerful guitar and vintage keyboards, including a Steinway Grand piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano, organ, Minimoog and ARP string- ensemble. The level of the musicians is very high, we can enjoy strong soli on guitar and keyboards and many captivating moments: exciting shifting moods and virtuosic piano play in the titletrack, excellent guitarwork in the vein of Jan Akkerman (Focus) in "Peccato Che .. !", a Spanish climate featuring strong vocals, howling electric guitar and orchestral keyboards in "El diablo" and swirling Fender Rhodes piano and fiery electric guitar in "Inquinamento".

A STRONG AND CAPTIVATING ALBUM, FORZA ITALIA!
