Lou Maxwell Taylor biography
Although somewhat categorisable as being in the singer-songwriter territory the music and project has a very independent expression. It's good to realize that this goes (way) beyond this definition, in the same way as the early works of Peter Hamill. The reference I made here is because Lou Maxwell Taylor has a similar rich expression of multi-instrumentation and arrangements that reveals a good deal of fantasy colouring. Also the singing has variation ("Lost Lake",..) and is very descriptive. I find it brilliant. Also Peter Hamill sang in a similar way with a perfect balance of story telling, emotion, theatrical expressiveness. The accompaniment is in a very individual way progressive. The front cover painting (by Peter Sis) is a good choice and describes the mood perfectly, with attention for the detail. I have rarely heard anything like this, with enough fantasy richness, since the seventies. Also the use of the Korg M1 provides rich colours (I especially like the Korg instrumental "News of the flood" and the accompaniment on various tracks). Participating on this recording : Michael Masley, Radim Zenkl, Barry Cleveland, Dan Reiter. Recommended to those who liked already Peter Hamill.

3 stars Lou Maxwelll Taylor is a little known folk musician outside USA. He release so far a single album in 1999 named Cheshire tree suite. The album is on prog folk territory where the deep voice of Maxwell in combination with acustical and all passages make a good listning. The music is intresting in many parts, specially the opening track and New Music For Morris Dancing, the best from here. Maxwell is helped by many musicians here, aswell some unusual instruments involved here like bodhran or dombek, but in combination with keyboards and all the rest is ok. This is the kind of folk best to listen in quite winter evenings, is perfect for prog folk listners, not very complicated but has that specific beauty in all pieces. Aswell the album is well balanced and quite varied in arrangements. In some places remind me of cours of Ian Anderson in his most folkish moments. So, a good album but I don't think is groundbreaking at all, anyway very nice cover art that goes hand in hand with the music.
