4 stars Although the cover art and songs such as Westworld might lead the listener to expect some sort of Western-themed take on post-rock, Canadian supergroup Valley of the Giants are a bit more of a varied prospect than that. With members drawn from various bands in the Constellation stable, it's not surprising that the music should take in so many different moods and atmospheres, from the gentle indie rock of Westworld to the Scandinavian shaggy dog story of Whaling Tale (which outlasts its welcome just a little, but for the most part is an amusing enough interlude). On the whole, it's a successful enough experiment, though I don't think it's an outright classic of the subgenre.

3 stars Post-rock meets the wild west? Who would've thought of it

When I heard that there's a post-rock super group I had to check it out as soon as I could. If you look at the cover of the album you might even hear what the music of the album should sound like. The album starts with an acoustic guitar playing some western music followed by the great cello playing of Sophie Trudeau. A nice opener that gets you into the mood of the album.

A note that has to be very clear is that this album is more on making a perfect and enjoyable spaghetti western atmosphere than anything else so its more on the atmospheric/ambient side of the spectrum. But it isn't all that way. Songs like Cantara sin guitarra, Back to god's country, Westworld (wich has some very good soft female vocals) and others are very well crafted songs that balance the whole album so that one doesn't gets bored on the ambient sounds.

One thing that I found strange is the song Whaling tale, It stands as the oddball of them all because it's a narrated story of a penguin in the artic and the music keeping company the narration is very cold sounding as oposed to the western sound of the album. It isn't bad at all its just wierd. In my opinion the song is at the same level as the others in the album.

Another great album for the progressive rock comunity. Excellent music, excellent atmosphere, excellent playing. Excellent album. I'll keep the details minimal so you can discover them while listening ;)

5 stars This band sounds like Ennio Morricone and Sergio Leone, transferring the Italian's love of the West into indie rock emotional detachment.

Their self-titled debut is an amazing wash of melancholic instrumentation, forlorn vocalization, and enough sun choked, cacti laced ambiance to fill the soundtracks of at least a dozen alternative Westerns. The album packaging itself is highly indicative of the aural array to be found on the disc itself. Rendered in a somewhat washed-out sepia tone, the stark image of Monument Valley brings to mind the wondrous images of John Ford, while the black ink spatters of the band's name hints at the eclectic "chaos" that they will be throwing into the collective images of the Wild West. In conclusión this album is excellnt, very talented musicians make a very impressive album.

5 stars Valley of the Giants is a Canadian supergroup featuring members of Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Strawberry, and Shalabi Effect.

A stunning cd of post rock music. This album hints at jazz and middle eastern influence but is laregly a rock cd. For the song "Back To God's Country" alone this cd is worth it, with a stunning flurry of percussion in the last few minutes. I would venture to say this cd is better than Godspeed or anything else in the post rock universe as it invokes feelings more than any other cd, plus the talent involved is godly. "A Whaling Tale" is a small weak point but at the same time funny, with spoken dialouge telling a story about a penguin being kidnapped by a whale. Overall, this can be branded an instant classic.
